FAQs for Parents
Parents often ask:
Shouldn’t all of the teaching be left to the teachers, who are the experts?
My answer :
Teachers are experts in their area and how to teach, but you are the expert on your child. That means that you know what works for your child, their likes and dislikes. You can support your child to develop their language to complement what happens at Kindy, Preschool and School.
Some Parents ask:
Will the teacher be angry if I teach my child letters and numbers at home?’
My answer:
The majority of the teachers appreciate the help and support parents give at home as children develop literacy skills, so long as the child enjoys it.
Parents often ask:
What can I do to help my child to learn to read and write?
My answer:
Start with spoken language, as it is the basis for early reading and writing. You are already doing this when you engage in conversations with your child, use new words, and give explanations. Then try to read to your child every day, so they develop a love of reading. Teach them to recognise and copy their name.
Parents often ask:
What about screen time? Is it good or bad for literacy?
My answer:
Since the advent of computers, reading and writing have become more strongly linked than ever before. A small amount of time playing educational games can be beneficial. Too much tends to isolate children from others.
